King of the Pirates — find the One Piece
Son of Revolutionary Dragon, grandson of Marine hero Garp. Accidentally ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi as a child — actually the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, hoarded by the World Government for 800 years. Mentored by Shanks, who sacrificed his arm to save him. The reincarnation of Joy Boy, the warrior of liberation prophesied to free the world. His Gear 5 awakening is the most powerful ability seen in the series.
The heart and soul of the crew. Luffy doesn't command — he inspires. His pure-hearted sincerity draws people in and makes them want to protect his dream as their own.

World's greatest swordsman — a promise to Kuina
Trained alongside rival Kuina at Isshin Dojo; after her death, vowed to achieve their shared dream in her name. Became a notorious bounty hunter before Luffy freed him from a Marine base. Carries Shimotsuki blood (revealed in Wano) and trained under Mihawk. Wields Enma — a 21 Great Grade blade — alongside Wado Ichimonji and Sandai Kitetsu. His "King of Hell" style uses black-clad Conqueror's Haki.
Luffy's right hand and the crew's backbone. Took all of Luffy's pain at Thriller Bark without a word. Built on total mutual trust. His rivalry with Sanji is a cornerstone of the crew's dynamic.

Orphaned by Arlong, adopted by Bell-mère alongside Nojiko. Spent years as Arlong's cartographer to buy her village's freedom. After Luffy's crew freed Cocoyasi Village, she joined permanently. Zeus — Big Mom's soul homie — now resides in her Clima-Tact, dramatically amplifying her weather attacks.
The crew's compass — literally and emotionally. She manages finances obsessively, reads the skies better than anyone. Her bond with Luffy is built on his unwavering belief in her when she had none in herself.

Become a brave warrior of the sea like his father Yasopp
Son of Yasopp of the Red Hair Pirates. Raised alone telling tall tales to inspire his own courage. His marksmanship is legendary — he sniped the World Government flag at Enies Lobby, a shot Oda called the coolest in the series. His lies have a habit of coming true. Carries Observation Haki despite zero formal training.
Luffy's childhood-spirited companion — both share the "liar-becomes-legend" energy. Represents the everyman. His arc of overcoming cowardice to become "God Usopp" is one of the most satisfying in the series.

Find the All Blue — where all the world's fish coexist
Third of the Vinsmoke quadruplets, genetically engineered but born "human-hearted." Escaped Germa to work under chef Zeff at the Baratie — who sacrificed his own leg to save child Sanji's life. In Wano his latent Germa modifications activated: exoskeleton, enhanced speed, and the blazing Ifrit Jambe. Never hits women, no exceptions, no matter the cost.
The crew's third pillar alongside Luffy and Zoro. His rivalry with Zoro is legendary. His commitment to feeding everyone is absolute. He sees the Straw Hats as the family Germa never was.

Dream
Develop a cure for every disease in the world
A blue-nosed reindeer who ate the Hito Hito no Mi, becoming an outcast among both reindeer and humans. Taken in by Dr. Hiriluk, who inspired his love of medicine despite being a quack himself. Trained under Dr. Kureha after Hiriluk's death. His Monster Point is among the crew's most devastating forms. Hiriluk's words — "When does a man die? When he's forgotten." — define his purpose.
The crew's heart in its purest form — loves everyone openly, gets excited about everything. Luffy treats him like a little brother and rides him constantly. More critical to the crew's survival than his comical bounty suggests.

Read the Rio Poneglyph — discover the True History
Child prodigy who learned to read Poneglyphs at age 8 in Ohara — the island erased by the World Government's Buster Call for harboring that knowledge. The sole survivor, hunted since childhood. Spent decades surviving by betraying every group she joined. Her Enies Lobby arc — "I want to live!" — is the emotional peak of One Piece's first half. One of only two living people who can read the ancient script.
Robin found her first true home with the Straw Hats — the first people who fought for her life rather than her usefulness. She is the crew's quiet anchor: the one who understands what the world truly is, and what the One Piece actually means.

Build a ship that sails around the entire world — then ride it himself
Real name Cutty Flam, trained under legendary shipwright Tom in Water 7 — the man who built Gold Roger's ship. When Tom was arrested and executed, Franky's body was destroyed in the resulting battle. He rebuilt himself as a cyborg using salvaged parts. Later upgraded using Vegapunk's own research. Built the Thousand Sunny — his masterpiece. The Sunny is as much a character as any crew member.
Big brother energy — loud, ridiculous, intensely passionate. His relationship with Luffy is built on mutual recognition of dreams. His iconic "SUPER!" and inexplicable speedo have become as beloved as the ship he built.

Return to Reverse Mountain to reunite with Laboon, who awaits him
Former captain of the Rumbar Pirates, a legendary crew wiped out by poison in the Florian Triangle 50 years ago. Dying, they recorded Bink's Sake to leave behind. Brook's Yomi Yomi no Mi let his soul return — but his body had decomposed. Spent 50 years alone on a ghost ship. His soul powers allow body separation, freezing opponents, and music weaponized as a blade. Yohoho.
Brook found the family he lost 50 years ago. His gratitude to Luffy is profound and unspoken. Brings music, humor (panty jokes), and a quiet melancholy. His promise to Laboon mirrors the entire journey — a reminder some bonds transcend time.

Former Warlord, captain of the Sun Pirates — founded by the legendary Fisher Tiger. Gave blood to save Luffy's life after Ace's death at Marineford. Resigned his Warlord status to stand with Luffy against Big Mom — at the cost of his own safety. Former ally of Big Mom's crew. Waited at Wano to fulfill his formal pledge to join the Straw Hats, arriving just in time to save Luffy's life once more.
Came to Luffy through the bond of Ace — the brother they both lost. The crew's elder statesman: calm, strategic, morally unimpeachable. As helmsman, steers the Sunny with the same precision he brings to everything.

Found as an infant inside a treasure chest during the God Valley Incident — believed to be connected to the Celestial Dragons or the Rocks Pirates era. Became a cabin boy on Roger's ship alongside Buggy, witnessing the discovery of Laugh Tale. After Roger's death, assembled his own crew and rose to Emperor status without ever eating a Devil Fruit — one of the most terrifying demonstrations of pure Haki in the world. Sacrificed his arm saving Luffy's life in Foosha Village. His Conqueror's Haki alone incapacitated an entire Marine fleet. The Five Elders appear to have a hidden agenda involving him.
Luffy's original hero and reason for becoming a pirate. Shanks gave Luffy his straw hat — a symbol meant to be returned when Luffy becomes a great pirate. His sacrifice of his arm planted the seed of Luffy's entire journey. Their reunion remains one of the most anticipated moments left in the story.

Spent 22 years as a crew member of Whitebeard's second division waiting specifically for the Yami Yami no Mi. Murdered his crewmate Thatch to steal it, triggering Ace's fateful pursuit. At Marineford ripped the Gura Gura no Mi from Whitebeard's dying body — making him the only known person to wield two Devil Fruits simultaneously. Orchestrated Ace's capture, the Paramount War, and the destruction of Marineford. One of the most calculated villains in the series. His endgame and the nature of his multiple-fruit ability remain unsolved mysteries.
Teach murdered Thatch, which led directly to Ace's death — the wound Luffy carries deepest. Their confrontation is inevitable. Blackbeard represents the dark mirror of Luffy: both carry the D., both pursue the One Piece, but one by betrayal and one by friendship.

How he became Emperor
Declared by the World Government after defeating Kaido at Wano — replacing him as one of the Four Emperors
The youngest Emperor in history. His Gear 5 awakening as the "Sun God Nika" fulfilled an 800-year prophecy. The World Government classified him as the most dangerous man alive — not for his power, but for his ability to make anyone around him want to be free. His Grand Fleet, formed without intent, became the largest pirate alliance in history. He holds the potential to reshape the world's power structure, and may already be doing so.
Trained under Rayleigh — Shanks' former crewmate. Has Shanks' hat. Fought Big Mom and Kaido simultaneously at Wano. Considers Blackbeard his ultimate rival for the One Piece. The only Emperor who genuinely doesn't think of himself as one.

How he became Emperor
World Government's panicked reaction to Cross Guild — put bounties on Marines. Buggy took credit as leader. Classic Buggy.
Cabin boy on Roger's ship alongside Shanks — witnessed Laugh Tale's approach, lost the Bara Bara no Mi accidentally by swallowing it before Shanks could. Luffy's very first antagonist, now somehow Emperor. Former Warlord. Founded Cross Guild with Dracule Mihawk and Crocodile, creating an organization that places bounties on Marines — terrifying the World Government into recognizing Buggy as an Emperor. His rise is one of One Piece's greatest cosmic jokes and also entirely legitimate.
First villain Luffy ever defeated. Perpetual rival from East Blue. Both were apprentices on Roger's ship (different eras — Luffy wasn't, but Buggy was). Their histories are intertwined in absurd ways. Despite everything, Buggy's connection to Roger is real — he knew the man personally.

The closest man to ever finding the One Piece — rival of Gold Roger in their era. Held the highest bounty in history. His Gura Gura no Mi was described by Sengoku as capable of destroying the world. Led the War of the Best (Marineford) to save Portgas D. Ace — his adopted son. Died standing, having received 267 sword wounds, 152 bullet wounds, and 46 cannon shots. Never turned his back on the enemy. His final declaration — "One Piece is real!" — restarted the Great Pirate Era.
Ace's adoptive father — the closest thing to a grandfather Luffy had. His death at Marineford, alongside Ace's, broke Luffy completely. The grief became the fuel for Luffy's two years of training and his true awakening. Newgate's legacy runs through everything the Straw Hat era has become.

One of only two known members of the Rocks Pirates to still be alive before Wano (alongside Kaido). Her strength was active since childhood — she accidentally destroyed a giant's village at age 6 during an eating episode, with no awareness of what she'd done. Built the most powerful family-based pirate empire on Whole Cake Island. Her Soru Soru no Mi lets her steal lifespans from those who fear her — she weaponizes existential dread. Defeated by Kid and Law at Wano, then fell into the underground with Kaido.
Luffy invaded Whole Cake Island to rescue Sanji from a forced marriage into her family. He made a promise to return and have a proper feast — a promise she never forgot. Despite the absurdity, that exchange was the most disarming thing anyone had ever done to her. Zeus now lives in Nami's weapon.

Considered the world's strongest creature. Survived every attempt to capture or kill him — has been captured by the Marines and Warlords seven times, sentenced to death over forty times. Every execution method failed. Was once a member of the Rocks Pirates alongside Big Mom and Whitebeard. His dream was to start the "greatest war the world has ever seen" to find the meaning of a true death. Was defeated by Luffy's Gear 5 and sent plummeting into Wano's magma — his final fate unknown but his reign is over.
Kaido defeated Luffy three times before Luffy defeated him once — at the peak of Gear 5. Their final battle on the roof of Onigashima is one of the greatest fights in the series. Kaido recognized Joy Boy's presence in Luffy in his dying moments — the first smile he'd shown in decades.

The world's greatest swordsman — the title Zoro seeks to claim. Achieved his position through pure skill; no Devil Fruit, no gimmicks. His Yoru is one of only 12 Supreme Grade swords in existence and one of only three known Black Blades. Former rival of Shanks — their fights were legendary enough to shake the world. Served as Warlord largely because the Marines preferred him nominally allied. After the system's abolition, joined Cross Guild. Accepted Zoro as a student after the Wano saga, perhaps the first student he's genuinely invested in.
The embodiment of Zoro's dream — which makes him one of the most important figures in Luffy's crew's arc. He recognized something rare in Zoro at their first meeting in the East Blue. His rivalry with Shanks and his training of Zoro ties him deeply to the Straw Hat story.

Conqueror's Haki + all three types
Empress of Amazon Lily, an island of warrior women in the Calm Belt. Kidnapped as a child along with her sisters, forced to bear the Celestial Dragon's slave brand. Her trauma runs deep — her beauty and power became armor against a world that had broken her. Her Mero Mero no Mi turns even her own tragic past into a weapon: petrification works on anyone who desires her. Posed as a Marine at Marineford to aid Luffy's rescue attempt. The only Warlord who actively used her status in service of someone else's dream.
Hopelessly and unapologetically in love with Luffy — the first person to ever be immune to her beauty (and her powers). He doesn't notice and probably never will. She risked everything twice for him: Marineford and the Warlord revocation. Amazon Lily remains a refuge that bears Luffy's mark.

Weakness
Water / blood (Luffy exploited both)
Luffy's first truly dangerous opponent — a Warlord who secretly ran the criminal organization Baroque Works under Alabasta's nose, plotting to steal the ancient weapon Pluton. Defeated by Luffy twice in Alabasta. Imprisoned in Impel Down until Luffy's breakout inadvertently freed him too. Fought at Marineford. Co-founded Cross Guild with Mihawk — ironically, Buggy ended up as the public face. His past connection to Whitebeard (and potentially Dragon) hints at a history the story hasn't fully revealed.
The villain Luffy defeated that made the world take notice. Lost to a boy who used water and his own blood to nullify a Logia. Despite being freed from prison by Luffy's chaos, their relationship is defined by Crocodile's contempt — and a growing grudging respect he'd never admit to.

Survivor of Flevance, a city destroyed by Amber Lead Syndrome — a disease the World Government knew was not contagious but let spread to cover up their mining operations. Orphaned, saved by Donquixote Doflamingo who raised him as a Donquixote family member. Was saved again — from Amber Lead's progression — by Corazon (Rosinante), Doflamingo's brother, who sacrificed himself to get Law his Devil Fruit. Law built his life around destroying Doflamingo in Corazon's memory. The Ope Ope no Mi can perform an "Immortality Operation" — at the cost of the user's life. Doflamingo craved it obsessively.
The "Supernova" alliance — two captains who formed a pact of convenience that became genuine partnership. Law's strategic mind complements Luffy's chaos perfectly. Law's D. initial may signal a destiny tied to Luffy's. Their alliance at Dressrosa and Wano is one of the highlights of the New World saga.

Born a Celestial Dragon (World Noble) who renounced that status as a child — a choice that cost his family everything when the world turned on them. Rebuilt himself through pure ruthlessness, ascending to Warlord status while secretly running the underworld as broker "Joker." Manufactured and distributed SMILE artificial Devil Fruits to Kaido. Controlled Dressrosa for decades using his strings. His awakened Birdcage — a shrinking string dome that would have killed every person on the island — is among the most terrifying abilities in the series. Defeated by Luffy's Gear Fourth.
The first awakened Devil Fruit user Luffy faced at full power. Doflamingo saw the D. in Luffy's name as a direct challenge to the Celestial Dragons' legacy. Their fight is one of the series' most iconic, ending with Luffy's Gear Fourth debut and Doflamingo's defeat and arrest.

Former commander of the Revolutionary Army
A former Revolutionary Army commander and king of Sorbet Kingdom who became a Warlord as part of a covert arrangement to spy for Dragon. Allowed Vegapunk to progressively modify his body — ultimately erasing all of his personality and memories to become a fully obedient Pacifista prototype for the World Government. This was his choice, made to protect his son Jewelry Bonney. Sent the entire Straw Hat crew flying to safety at Sabaody Archipelago — each to a place that would make them stronger. Briefly recovered fragments of consciousness at Egghead.
Kuma is the reason the Straw Hats became strong enough for the New World. Without his sacrifice at Sabaody — taking all of Luffy's accumulated pain into himself — the crew would have been captured or killed. Luffy doesn't fully understand what Kuma gave up. Bonney does.

Tragedy
Entire original crew destroyed by Kaido in the New World
Lost his entire original crew to Kaido decades ago — an event that broke something in him, leading him to build an army of corpses rather than trust living nakama again. Operated from the floating island Thriller Bark, stealing shadows from living people to reanimate corpses. Defeated by Luffy's Nightmare Luffy form (Oars arc). Was ordered eliminated by the World Government after losing his Warlord status, but survived. His Wano origins and connection to Kaido suggest there's more story left for him — particularly involving Perona and his abandoned past.
Villain of the Thriller Bark arc, defeated when Luffy absorbed 100 shadows. Moria represents what grief and loss can twist a pirate captain into — a cautionary contrast to how Luffy handles loss. Brook's joining the crew in the same arc makes this contrast even sharper.

Admiral → Fleet Admiral (beat Aokiji on Punk Hazard)
The most feared name in the Marines. His "Absolute Justice" philosophy brooks zero tolerance — he ordered the Buster Call that destroyed Ohara even after the scholars had already surrendered, just to ensure no survivor could carry their knowledge. His magma beats fire, which means Ace's flame was never a match for him. Won the brutal ten-day duel with Aokiji on Punk Hazard that decided the Fleet Admiral position — their battle split the island permanently into a half-frozen, half-scorched wasteland. The scar on his face was put there by Whitebeard. The most politically dangerous Marine alive.
Killed Ace. That is enough. His fist through Ace's chest is the wound that defines Luffy's entire post-timeskip existence. Their eventual rematch is one of the most anticipated confrontations in the story. Akainu's conviction that "pirates corrupt the world" and Luffy's existence are philosophically irreconcilable.

Sent to eliminate Vegapunk — faced an internal crisis
Moves and fires at the speed of light — his lasers are literal photons. His demeanor is so calm and unhurried that his brutality feels almost accidental, which makes him uniquely terrifying. Dismantled the entire Sabaody Archipelago gathering of Supernovas without breaking a sweat, appearing almost bored while doing so. At Egghead, sent to execute Vegapunk — his old friend — per the World Government's orders. The arc forced him to confront whether absolute obedience is the same as justice. His internal conflict at Egghead is the most character depth he's been given.
The Admiral who scattered the Straw Hats at Sabaody — the moment that ended the first half of the story. Luffy was completely powerless against him, which set the stakes for the entire two-year training arc. Their meeting at Egghead, with a far stronger Luffy, was long anticipated by fans.

Sense
Extraordinary Observation Haki compensates for blindness
Recruited as a new Admiral alongside Ryokugyu after Aokiji's resignation. His blindness is self-imposed — he gouged out his own eyes because he couldn't bear to witness the atrocities the World Government committed. Opposes the Warlord system openly, which brought him into indirect conflict with Akainu. At Dressrosa, deliberately fumbled his duties to allow Luffy to defeat Doflamingo — he judged it the more just outcome. Used his gravity powers to pull a fleet of meteors onto Dressrosa rather than let Marines board and take credit for saving civilians who suffered under a Warlord the Marines had protected.
The most morally complicated Admiral in the series. He chose not to arrest Luffy at Dressrosa — deciding justice meant letting the pirate who would free the people do so. Known For
Attacked Wano alone — stopped by Shanks' Conqueror's Haki
One of the two new Admirals recruited in the timeskip era alongside Fujitora. Appeared post-Wano to eliminate the "weakened" Straw Hats — tore through the Beasts Pirates' remnants with his forest body, draining their life force effortlessly. Came within striking distance of Luffy before Shanks intervened, stopping Ryokugyu cold with a single burst of Conqueror's Haki from across the sea. That moment confirmed Shanks' power level as something entirely different. Ryokugyu represents the Akainu-era Marines: absolute obedience framed as conviction.
Came to finish what Kaido's defeat began — eliminate the new Emperor while his crew was vulnerable. Was stopped not by Luffy but by Shanks, which is a statement about where Luffy stands in the world's power structure. Their full confrontation is still pending.

Appears affiliated with Blackbeard (possibly undercover)
The "Lazy Justice" Admiral — his interpretation of justice was more flexible and humane than Akainu's absolute doctrine. Lost the 10-day battle for Fleet Admiral to Akainu on Punk Hazard, losing his left leg in the process — both men's powers permanently scarred the island. Resigned from the Marines rather than serve under Akainu. Appeared later affiliated with the Blackbeard Pirates, which shocked the world — though whether this is a cover story for a deeper mission remains one of the story's open questions. His morality has always been the most nuanced of any Admiral.
Encountered the Straw Hats at Long Ring Long Land — chose not to arrest Robin despite orders, letting the crew go. His "lazy justice" meant he could recognize when the law was wrong. Remains an ambiguous figure — neither ally nor enemy, but someone who chose his own conscience over the institution.

Partner

Fleet Admiral during the era of Gold Roger's execution through the Paramount War at Marineford. Considered one of the greatest Marines in history. His Mythical Zoan grants a massive golden Buddha form capable of pulverizing whole battlefields. Orchestrated much of the Marineford War — the largest battle in post-Roger history. Resigned after the war's chaos, passing command to Akainu. Secretly covered up the truth of Portgas D. Ace's parentage for years to protect the World Government. Now serves as Inspector General — a quieter role, but still carrying enormous institutional knowledge.
Grandson of Garp — Sengoku's oldest partner. Fought against Luffy at Marineford but understood exactly what Luffy's chaos meant: a new era arriving whether the Marines were ready or not. His respect for Garp implies a complicated respect for the bloodline that keeps disrupting the world's order.

Baltigo (destroyed) → Momoiro Island
The most wanted man alive — more feared by the World Government than any pirate. Founded the Revolutionary Army to dismantle the Celestial Dragon system from within, targeting the structure of global power rather than any one nation. His past as a Marine is hinted at but never confirmed. Was present at Loguetown when Luffy was about to be executed by Smoker — the wind that freed Luffy was almost certainly him. His true power remains one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in the series. Father of Luffy, son of Garp — a family that spans every faction that matters.
Father and son who have met exactly once on panel — at Loguetown, when Luffy didn't know who he was. Dragon chose to leave Luffy to find his own path rather than raise him, a choice with enormous narrative weight. Their eventual reunion is one of the most anticipated moments left in the story. Luffy's goal of being free and Dragon's goal of liberation are the same dream wearing different clothes.

Amnesia for 10 years after Celestial Dragon attack — recovered upon hearing of Ace's death
Grew up with Luffy and Ace in Goa, becoming their sworn older brother. Attacked by a Celestial Dragon's ship and nearly killed as a child; his memory was lost for a decade. Joined the Revolutionary Army upon regaining it. Rose to Chief of Staff — Dragon's right hand. At Dressrosa, ate the Mera Mera no Mi at the Corrida Colosseum to keep it out of Doflamingo's hands, winning it as "Lucy." Carrying Ace's fire is the heaviest kind of inheritance — both tribute and responsibility. Was reportedly involved in the incident at Reverie involving the Celestial Dragons, which shook the world.
The brother Luffy thought he'd lost forever, returned. Sabo is the emotional bridge between Luffy's childhood (Ace) and his future (Dragon). Their reunion at Dressrosa — Luffy recognizing Sabo's laugh — is one of the series' most emotionally loaded moments. Sabo carries Ace's flame so it's never truly gone.

Keeping Dragon's old comrades safe; saving Luffy's life twice
Queen of Kamabakka Kingdom and one of Dragon's oldest allies. Was imprisoned in Impel Down Level 5.5 — a hidden level he carved out himself and populated with fellow prisoners, creating a thriving underground community. Injected Luffy with adrenaline hormones to survive Magellan's poison, burning 10 years off Luffy's lifespan in the process. Led the Impel Down escapes and fought at Marineford. His hormone manipulation can trigger the human body's most extreme responses — a field medic, battlefield enhancer, and fighter all in one flamboyant package.
Ivankov saved Luffy's life at the cost of a decade of his lifespan — a debt Luffy doesn't think about in those terms but Ivankov does. He recognized in Luffy the same impossible-to-kill quality he'd seen in Dragon. "Miracle Boy" became his nickname for Luffy. Sanji spent his two years of training on Momoiro Island, which Ivankov oversees.

History
Former slave freed by Fisher Tiger and the Sun Pirates
As a child, Koala was a slave freed by Fisher Tiger during his raid on Mary Geoise — the same event that made Tiger a legend and created the Sun Pirates. The psychological damage of slavery left her unable to stop smiling out of fear for years after being freed. Returned home with the Sun Pirates, then eventually found her way to the Revolutionary Army, where she became one of its most capable field operatives. Her mastery of Fishman Karate — the same style as Jinbe — honors the legacy of the crew that saved her life.
Koala is the human thread that connects Fisher Tiger → Jinbe → Sun Pirates → Robin's liberation → Fishman Island. Her presence in the Revolutionary Army ties the story's themes of slavery and freedom to their most personal roots. Her partnership with Sabo gives her a direct line to Luffy's history even when their paths don't directly cross.

"Weak people who want freedom must reach for it themselves — I only give them the push"
Commander of the East Army division of the Revolutionary Army. Her Kobu Kobu no Mi allows her to dramatically boost the fighting capacity of anyone around her who has the will to fight — she doesn't fight for people, she makes them capable of fighting for themselves. This philosophy perfectly embodies the Revolutionary Army's ideology: not liberation handed down, but the tools for people to liberate themselves. Participated in the Lulusia Kingdom raid, targeting Celestial Dragon treasure alongside her fellow commanders.
Part of the broader Revolutionary Army infrastructure that fights the same system Luffy instinctively dismantles wherever he goes — but with organization and intent. Betty represents the army's ideological core: awakening people's own will to be free, not rescuing them from above.

History

Notable
Literally carved out Newkama Land (Impel Down Level 5.5) with bare hands over decades
A giant who was imprisoned in Impel Down long before Ivankov's time — and who spent decades carving out the secret Level 5.5 with their Push-Push powers, creating the hidden sanctuary that would later shelter hundreds of prisoners including Ivankov. That act of stubborn, long-term resistance perfectly represents what the Revolutionary Army is: people who refused to accept the world as it was handed to them. Now commands the West Army. Their terrain manipulation makes them one of the most tactically disruptive fighters in the organization.
Morley's Level 5.5 is where Ivankov was hiding — the place that made Luffy's Impel Down rescue possible. Without that carved-out sanctuary, Luffy would never have found Ivankov, never gotten the hormone treatment, and Ace would likely not have been reachable in time. An indirect but foundational link in the chain.

Surrendered to the Marines — executed at Loguetown
The only man to ever conquer the Grand Line and reach Laugh Tale — the man who found the One Piece and gave it its name. Born with the Voice of All Things, able to hear and decipher Poneglyphs — a power shared only by Oden and later implied in Luffy. Turned himself in to the Marines after falling terminally ill, choosing to die on his own terms. His execution speech — "My treasure? It's yours if you want it — seek it out!" — launched the Great Pirate Era. His crew included Rayleigh, Oden, Shanks, and Buggy. He left behind the world's greatest mystery for anyone bold enough to chase it.
Luffy is Roger's spiritual successor — both carry the Will of D., both wield Conqueror's Haki, both hear the Voice of All Things. Roger told Rayleigh he was too early; he believed the next generation would find what he couldn't finish. Shanks (Roger's apprentice) gave Luffy his straw hat — Roger's hat — deliberately passing the torch. Luffy's goal of "Pirate King" is the same throne Roger once sat on, but Luffy's version of freedom is his own.

Role in Story
Trained Luffy in Haki for 1.5 years during the timeskip
Described as a "somewhat decent" swordsman by himself — which means he was terrifyingly powerful at his peak. As Roger's right hand, he was there for every moment of the voyage to Laugh Tale and knows the full truth of the world. After Roger's death, he retired to Sabaody, coating ships and living quietly — though Kizaru made clear he was not someone to pick a fight with. He coated the Thousand Sunny for free when Luffy and crew passed through the second time. He's the living memory of Roger's era.
Rayleigh saw Roger in Luffy the moment they met at the Sabaody auction house. He took Luffy to Rusukaina island after Ace's death and spent the timeskip teaching him Armament, Observation, and Conqueror's Haki. He didn't tell Luffy what the One Piece is — he wanted him to find it himself, just as Roger would've wanted. The straw hat is the bridge: Roger → Shanks → Luffy, and Rayleigh witnessed every handoff.

Boiled alive by Kaido & Orochi — survived 1 hour, freed his crew
One of the most legendary figures in the entire series. Born wild and unkillable — he survived boiling oil for a full hour before Kaido shot him. Sailed with both Whitebeard and Roger (the only person to serve on both crews), reached Laugh Tale, learned the truth of the Void Century and the Ancient Weapons. His dual swords Enma and Ame no Habakiri could scar Kaido — the only blades ever to do so before Zoro. His scars on Kaido became the symbol of hope for Wano for 20 years. He kept a journal that Yamato memorized — that journal shaped Yamato's entire identity and helped the Straw Hats during the Wano arc.
Zoro now wields Oden's sword Enma — inheriting both the blade and the responsibility it carries. His son Momonosuke became Shogun of Wano thanks to Luffy and the crew. Yamato, who idolized Oden completely, fought alongside the Straw Hats to honor him. Oden's legacy runs through nearly every major character that comes out of Wano.

Legacy
His dream lives in Blackbeard — both carry the D. initial
The most dangerous pirate to ever live — before Roger. His crew was so powerful that Roger and Garp had to team up to stop him, an event so embarrassing to the World Government that they erased the island of God Valley from every map. Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaido — the three most monstrous forces of the current era — were all just crew members under him. His goal wasn't to be Pirate King; it was to be King of the entire world. Blackbeard is widely believed to be his spiritual successor, possibly literal (the D. in his name, his ship named "Saber of Xebec"). The full scope of his power is still unknown.
Xebec is the shadow cast over the entire endgame. If Blackbeard truly inherits his will, the final battle won't just be Roger's legacy vs. Luffy — it'll be Rocks vs. Roger, one generation later. Garp has described the God Valley incident as the most important battle in Marine history, which he can't discuss publicly. The World Government would rather erase history than admit they needed pirates to save them.

Fate
Killed by Akainu's magma fist at Marineford, shielding Luffy
Roger's biological son — a secret kept hidden to protect him from the World Government. Raised by Garp alongside Luffy on Dawn Island, he made a childhood pact of brotherhood with Luffy and Sabo. Left to sea at 17, eventually becoming one of Whitebeard's most trusted commanders. His capture by the Marines and impending execution at Marineford set off the largest war in the series. Whitebeard launched a full invasion to save him. He was freed — but died anyway, stepping in front of Akainu's magma to save Luffy. His death is the single most defining moment of Luffy's journey. His fruit was later passed to Sabo at Dressrosa.
The loss of Ace is what broke Luffy completely — and what rebuilt him into who he is now. Luffy trained for two years specifically so he would never be powerless again the way he was at Marineford. Every time Luffy pushes past his limits, it's Ace's shadow pushing him. Ace's name tattooed on his arm, his hat, his laugh — Luffy carries him everywhere.

Fought Blackbeard's crew at Hachinosu to save Koby — status uncertain
The strongest Marine to ever live who wasn't an Admiral — by choice. He declined the rank of Admiral repeatedly because he didn't want to be under direct World Government control. The only man to have ever cornered Roger in battle; Roger considered him a worthy rival and perhaps a friend. Raised Luffy by throwing him off cliffs. Raised Ace knowing the boy was Roger's son, keeping that secret for decades. At Marineford, he was there when Ace died — unable to act without betraying his entire life of service. His final loyalty test came at Hachinosu, where he chose Koby over staying neutral, possibly at the cost of his own life.
Garp is the root of the family tree that Luffy, Ace, and Dragon all grow from — three different responses to the same broken world. Garp believed in the system and tried to change it from within; Dragon rejected it entirely; Luffy ignores it and acts on pure will. Garp's greatest agony is that the people he loves most are the world's most wanted criminals. He still shows up. He still cares. That's the tragedy.

The only person who could have been a Straw Hat but chose not to be — to stay and protect her kingdom instead. She infiltrated Baroque Works as "Ms. Wednesday" to gather intel on Crocodile's plan to destroy Alabasta from within. She traveled with the crew through the entire Alabasta arc, fought alongside them, nearly died with them. When it ended, she waved goodbye from the shore while they sailed away — the Straw Hats' raised fists their silent promise. Her father King Cobra was later murdered at the Reverie, and Sabo was framed. She now carries knowledge of the Void Century and the D. clan that the World Government would kill to suppress. She's back — and the Final Saga has placed her at the center of things again.
Vivi chose her country over the crew — Luffy understood and respected it completely. She'll always be nakama to them, just living a different version of it. Her return in the Final Saga suggests her story isn't over. If anything, it's just beginning its second chapter.

Born the daughter of the world's most fearsome creature, she found Oden's journal as a child and devoted her entire life to becoming him. She was imprisoned by her own father for years for this. She met Ace when he came to Wano, and the two formed a bond — Ace's death hit her deeply. When the Straw Hats arrived, she immediately allied with Luffy, fighting Kaido alongside him on the roof of Onigashima. Her Devil Fruit grants her a Divine Wolf form — an ancient guardian deity of Wano. She nearly joined the crew but ultimately stayed behind to protect Wano, as Oden had done. Her Conqueror's Haki and raw power make her one of the strongest characters introduced in the Wano arc.
Yamato and Luffy fought side by side against Kaido at the top of Onigashima. Her bond with Ace connects her to Luffy on a personal level beyond just alliance. She chose to stay in Wano — but like Vivi, the door is never fully closed. The world is still moving, and Wano is open to the seas now.
